There are places in the world that are so wonderful and magical that they should be seen at least once in a lifetime. Among so many destinations, without a doubt, the Cinque Terre certainly deserve more than others!
You call them so because they were once isolated from the world to the point of appearing as distant “lands”, today the Cinque Terre are nothing more than five enchanting places on the eastern Ligurian Riviera where going on vacation really means living a fairy tale to tell.
Lands overlooking the sea, of precious vineyards, of a thousand colored houses, of tiny paths to be traced on foot, of winding streets, of ancient shops and breathtaking views. The “fantastic five” – Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore – they can be easily reached by car, ferry or train but once you arrive at your destination, choose one of the locations and you will soon see the desire to discover the others, we advise you to experience them on foot or, at most, by bike. Slow tourism here will make you appreciate the details of nature and the details of the landscape: breathtaking scenery that would otherwise be less unique even for the most attentive of the eyes.
Take the Via dell’Amore, a romantic walk that connects Riomaggiore to Manarola, go in search of the religious architecture that Monterosso still preserves today, climb the cliff where the village of Corniglia seems to have rested with its Lardarina, the brick staircase made of 377 well steps and 33 ramps that will open you up to a glimpse of the world. Once landed in Vernazza, a landing place for the ships that had the task of impeding the passage of the Saracens, take refuge in Monterosso where the poet Montale also found his Buen Retiro.
There are many ways that you can follow: the Sanctuaries path that dominates the five villages halfway up the hill, remaining suspended between the sky and the sea, the Blue Path, which unites the same places between romantic walks and breathtaking viewpoints that have become Heritage since 1997 World Heritage Site protected by UNESCO, and which are also part of a truly sui generis National Park.
The oldest village of the Cinque Terre is probably Manarola. It is said to have Romanesque origins. The oldest part consisted of a fortress and a castle of which some ruins remain.
Manarola also boasts its history, its name derives from the Latin.
From Corniglia, you can see all the other towns of the Cinque Terre. It is the only center of the entire area, however, which is not wet by the sea so much, so that the inhabitants boast a tradition dedicated to agriculture rather than to the sea.
Vernazza is beautiful, with its Belforte castle and an enchanting mule track that can be covered on foot by going up from the station to the sanctuary of “Nostra Signora di Reggio”.
Finally, Monterosso, the westernmost place of these lands with its ancient medieval village, its tower with the facade decorated with a large marble rose window, its modern and residential center and important works of art kept in the church of San Francesco between which also features an interesting Van Dyck.
Wherever you are, if you decide to sit down for lunch or dinner, definitely choose fish. Here are caught and cooked at the moment tasty sea bass then octopus, cuttlefish, squid, sea bream, squid and anchovies. We suggest you to accompany all the courses with the excellent white wine of the area and to finish the lunch with a glass of Sciachetrà, raisin wine that is envied by the whole world!
