Legend has it that Saint Julius, who fled Greece to escape persecution, founded his hundredth church here in an attempt to fight paganism. Not finding a boat to get to this small patch of land, it seems that he even stripped off his cloak and laid it on the water to walk on it and then cast out, with the only use of the power of the word, dragons and snakes that they would haunt the island and castle.
Welcome to Lake Orta, the westernmost of the great lakes of the Italian Pre-Alps, between the Ossola valley and the western shore of the Lower Lake Maggiore. Land of legends, but also moderate tourism and magical atmospheres, according to many this is the most romantic lake in the Bel Paese!
At the center of it, there is the island of San Giulio, in the past a prestigious ducal seat when the Lombards dominated the area. After having even hosted Queen Willa, wife of Berengario, on the run, today the island is inhabited practically only by nuns who live in a cloistered monastery built in what was once the ancient manor that dominated the lake.
Lose yourself in the maze of narrow streets and among the historic buildings that overlook a reality that has remained enchanted over time! Take a walk up to the Sacro Monte with statues, scenographic and pictorial furnishings that can surprise. To the east still stands the tower of Buccione, once used by sentries for sightings and the defence of the fiefdom. Also visit the hamlets, such as that of Ronco, or that of Omegna with the historic center cut by a stream and crossed by a romantic footbridge. Here was the birthplace of the fairytale writer Gianni Rodari!
On the western shore of Lake Orta do not miss Pella, among its ancient villages rich in history. The small village has been inhabited since the Iron Age, as evidenced by the various cupels engraved on a boulder along the ancient path of the stonemasons.
Enjoy a stay at Villa Terrazza Sul Lago, a charming 18th-century mansion. Ideal for couples, families and groups, it is also suitable for hosting events and small ceremonies.
