Le Marche… what else! The only region in the plural, Le Marche are truly unique. They take their name from the ancient German language which in the past described the border regions with the term “Mark”. And Le Marche, for centuries, was the border area with the Holy Roman Empire. Their fiefs were divided into Marca di Fano, Marca di Camerino, Marca di Ancona…. That why Le Marche!
The same lands, for economy, culture, art, environment… and a million other reasons, have always been divided but, at the same time, united. From north to south, Le Marche are a unicum of differences!
Here men were born who did great things: the Urbino painter Raffaello Sanzio, whose 500th anniversary will be celebrated this year, the composer Gioachino Rossini, who set the barber of Seville to music, the poet Giacomo Leopardi, who is one of the most important figures of world literature, the pedagogist Maria Montessori, known for her revolutionary teaching method. And then, again, the architect Donato Bramante, one of the main artists of the Renaissance, the Jesuit Father Matteo Ricci, one of the greatest disseminators of Western culture in China, and the composers Giovanni Battista Pergolesi and Gaspare Spontini as well as the entrepreneur Enrico Mattei, at pilot Valentino Rossi, the fencer Valentina Vezzali.
In economics, even today, in the most prestigious universities in the world, Le Marche economic model is studied as a sign of industriousness and attachment to the land!
Its territory is extraordinary. You’ll find sea, plains, hills, mountains and then parks and nature reserves, lakes and rivers and much more coexisting together. In each province, in each municipality, in each locality, a particularity to look for. This is the land of theatres and a thousand of bell towers!
